CHAPTER 17
ON THE ROAD
Friday, April 18.
The colonel and Mark discussed what it would take to move the entire group to the farm. It was going to be a daunting task. Mark was glad to have the colonel there with all his experience in logistics to make a plan of action. Mark’s role was clear. Get the patients ready for the trip as soon as possible. Martha was starting to look better, and barring any unforeseen complications, she would be ready in the next day or so. Tammy’s condition was a little less certain. If he could get her off the vent and on oxygen by mask, or nasal cannula, then she would be able to travel. But whether that would be sooner or later was not something he could predict. But if he had to guess, it would be at least a day or two, but they did not have the luxury of time on their side.
The colonel wanted to hit the road by early morning. The earlier the better. The bad guys usually slept before sunrise and into early morning. That was the safest time to travel in hostile territory. They would take the back roads and stay off the main highways and as far away from the interstate as possible and come into the farm from the east. By his calculations, traveling at an average of forty miles per hour, if they didn’t encounter trouble, didn’t run into any obstructions, didn’t break down, and didn’t have to take a bladder break, it would take about two hours to get there. Not too far to go on a Sunday drive, but this would be no leisurely cruise.
The colonel had the troops start preparing for the trip. They gassed up the vehicles with the borrowed gas siphoned from the neighborhood mowers and cars left behind by the others. They gathered up as much food, water, lamps, oil, bullets, and other supplies that they could carry with them. Last but not least would be the OR, the generator, and the ventilator that Tammy was still connected to. No reason to leave it behind. It could come in handy again. The colonel would have the caravan armed, loaded, and ready to roll. After that, it would be up to Mark to make the call when they were ready to get out of Dodge.
Things were fairly quiet the rest of the day. Mark, Cindy, Jack, and Mrs. Dickerson spent the day taking care of their patients. Andrew had a bath in the tub with water heated on the stove and was up walking in the house and eating everything he could find. Martha was taking sips of liquids and keeping them down and was passing gas into her colostomy bag, evidence her intestines were starting to work again. Tammy was making slow but good progress on the vent. Mark had her on a T-piece trial. She was breathing on her own, and he was able to get her off the ventilator and on nasal oxygen much earlier than expected.
